What Is an Independent Medical Exam?

Independent Medical Exam is a medical evaluation requested during an injury claim or lawsuit to assess a person’s injuries, treatment, diagnosis, and ability to function. A healthcare professional who is not the person’s treating provider performs the examination and prepares findings that may affect disputes about the injury and related damages.

  • The evaluator usually does not provide ongoing treatment.
  • The report may address diagnosis, causation, and functional limits.
  • An exam is not the same as a treating doctor’s appointment.

How Independent Medical Exam Works

An Independent Medical Exam usually follows a request from an insurer or another party in an injury dispute. A medical professional reviews selected records, asks about symptoms and daily activities, and may perform a physical examination. The evaluator then prepares a report that addresses the claimed condition.

The word independent describes the evaluator’s role, but the requesting party may select or arrange the examination. The evaluator does not normally become the patient’s treating provider. In a spinal cord injury claim, the report may discuss the connection between the crash and the injury, the need for continued care, and limits on movement or work. The report can become part of settlement discussions or court proceedings.

From the Atlanta Auto Law team

When we review an Independent Medical Exam, we compare its opinions with the medical records, treatment history, diagnostic findings, and reported limitations. We also examine whether the evaluator considered the full spinal cord injury picture, including ongoing care needs and changes in daily function.
